ALFILM 10 – Arab Filmfestival Berlin – takes place from the 3rd to the 11th of November 2010.
The Films
ALFILM presents artistically and thematically outstanding films from the Arabic world.
Main program
ALFILM‘s main program comprises recent films – not older than three years – produced or co-produced in an Arabic country, by an Arabic filmmaker, or deal with an issue connected to the Arabic world.
FOCUS 10
The topic of the FOCUS section in ALFILM 10 is »migration«.
FOCUS 10 comprises films dealing with migration from an Arabic perspective.
As the Arab world continues to be an origin of migration, Arabic communities in western countries became a subject of political, social, and cultural dispute as well as controversy. The challenges facing migrating individuals and communities are dramatically increasing. Issues of integration or alienation; expatriation or belonging; and adaptation or compliance have been thoroughly addressed by Arabic filmmakers worldwide.
On the other side, Arabic countries have and had been witnessing rapid urban growth. Searching for better life standards or fleeing war and conflict zones, more and more people are leaving rural areas and moving to urban centers. Tradition clashes with new social structures. Such clashes have been an inspiration for numerous Arabic films since the 1920’s.
With this topic FOKUS 10 tries to enrich the already existing debate on migration, nevertheless among migrants themselves. Films provide a suitable medium challenging existing perception of the other as well as of oneself. The planned panel discussion should add further analysis of images created and/or framed in film and their real-life counterparts.
SPECIALS
Along the Main Program and the FOCUS Section, ALFILM includes special events and screenings as well. A panel discussion titled: Arab filmmakers between funding and artistic freedom, will be taking place. The festival will close with a musical concert.
