9th ALFILM Official Selection
The films of this 9th festival edition tell of challenges and resistance; of women asserting themselves in male domains, like Mariam, protagonist of the opening film Beauty and the Dogs, or the teenage footballers in 17; of the ingenuity of those who pursue their dreams despite all economic obstacles like the peasant Haykal in Those Who Remain and his brothers in spirit Hervé and Fouad from Northern Wind; and finally of war and exile, as in the Syrian contributions A Memory in Khaki, My Paradise and Taste of Cement, the closing film of the festival.
It is about finding a place in life and making sense of the events, in Egypt (Happily Ever After) as well as in Lebanon (I used to Sleep on the Rooftop). We laugh with people who get together again, like the Nazarene family around Abu Shadi in Wajib, and fear with the lovers in Volubilis, while we discover the unconventional alliance Of Sheep and Men in Algeria.
The three short film programs offer a decon-struction of reality, surprises from the wild Lebanon and stories of unknown distances.
